| Summary: | The emerging field of epigenetics promises to unravel many unexplained mechanisms associated with various phenotypes including sex and diseases. Almost nothing is known about the evolution of this system. This project will compare epigenetic signatures of sex determination and the immune system among divergent taxa discovering the novel mechanisms in evolution of epigenetic egulation. Our research program is conceptually innovative as we tackle challenging aims using cross-disciplinary and comparative epigenomic approaches. The data gleaned from these approaches will thus be wholly informative in addressing fundamental biological questions in relation to the role of epigenetics in sex determination and immune function. |

| Investigator(s): | Stephen Sarre |
|
| Former category: | Not applicable |
| HERDC: | Category 4: Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) research income |
| Year(s): | 2012 – 2015 |
| Summary: | We propose two developments in scat DNA analysis that would provide important efficiency gains for the fox eradication program: (1) Mechanized extraction of trace DNA from predator scats; and (2) Next Generation DNA sequencing approaches to the analysis of predator scat DNA. These developments can be employed for the DNA analysis of scats planned as part of the monitoring already proposed under the Precautionary Baiting Approach adopted by the department. They will provide timely information about the changing nature of Tasmania’s fox population and of other key vertebrate pests (cats, dogs) and native fauna. |

| Summary: | Invasive fishes are a major threat to native species and ecological communities, nationally and internationally. Early detection of such fishes while they are still rare is the key to preventing their establishment but is problematic using conventional sampling. We will use advanced genomic approaches such as next generation sequencing to detect the DNA discharged into water by fish as a more effective approach to this problem. Our goal is to provide the platform for a comprehensive suite of tests for all fish species that threaten Australia’s biosecurity. |

| Summary: | The processes leading to extinction are of intrinsic and practical importance given increasing global pressures on biodiversity. While much is known of the broad-scale drivers of extinction, our knowledge of the finer scale processes leading to local extinctions is poor. Here, we address challenging theoretical and practical questions on local extinction of an ectotherm – the endangered grassland earless dragon. . |
